Spring Practice

My first look at the 2012 Utah football team came today (April 19) at Rice-Eccles.

Utah RB Eric Davidson keeps his eye on the ball as he catches a short pass during drills as The University of Utah football team practices at Rice-Eccles Stadium, Thursday, April 19, 2012.

As usual, with the first football assignment of the year, there is a little bit of shaking of the rust. Reaction time is slow, and there are new faces to get acquainted with.

Utah Freshman QB Adam Schulz spins a football as he waits for a passing drill to begin.

Here are a few of the best from today’s shoot:

Utah Offensive Coordinator Brian Johnson still has the arm as he airs it out during a passing drill while QB Jordan Wynn watches.

Utah DE Thretton Palamo was switched from RB to DE this year. Here he laughs while waiting for a defensive drill to begin. It’ll be fun to watch for that hair flying around the edge as he rushes QBs this year.

WR DeVonte Christopher looked sharp

RB John White looked calm and confident

OC Brian Johnson teased Morgan Scalley when his offense beat Scalley’s safties

As always, Head Coach Kyle Whittingham watched it all like a hawk

WR Dres Anderson, right, celebrated TE Weslee Tonga’s TD catch. Tonga has been switched from DE to the offense.

QB Chase Hansen

No doubt Ute fans are looking forward to seeing QB Chase Hansen compete for the starting QB spot in spring camp after coming off state championships in football and basketball at Lone Peak.

… see Bill Oram’s blog about Hansen’s commitment to Utah here …

Brian Johnson named Utah O.C.

Utah named former Utah QB Brian Johnson as their new offensive coordinator Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012. Here, Utah quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson talks with QB Jon Hays after the offense came off the field in the third quarter against Oregon State during the Utes’ 27-8 win, Saturday, October 29, 2011.

Utah QB Brian Johnson reacts to the crowd’s praise after he directed the tying drive and running in the two-point conversion himself as Utah beat Oregon State 31-28 on a last second FG by K Louie Sakoda, October 2, 2008.
